What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for voice over IP. IP is the networking standard that both your office network and the Internet use. Once your phone systems use the same communications mechanisms as your office network, countless new abilities become available. The phones and the computers on your network can now talk to each forming a link between two communications tools that were isolated in the past. Our phone systems at Binary Rescue are built on VoIP technology.
Myths and Facts about VoIP
Just like any new technology a whole host of myths has arisen about VoIP technology. These are just a few:
- The sound quality is bad
- Hackers can make long distance calls on your bill
- VoIP is expensive
- Traditional phones are easier to use
All of these myths have proven to be false. In fact many of these myths were created and propogated by the traditional phone companies who simply cannot compete with what VoIP has to offer.
Here are the facts:
- The sound quality can be better than traditional phones. You get to choose the level of sound quality that you prefer.
- Properly configured VoIP systems are no less secure than traditional phone systems. In fact hackers were able to compromise the traditional phone systems years before anyone even knew about it. One of the very first forms of hacking was known as phone phreaking. Phone phreakers were able to place free long distance calls, reroute numbers, and anything else they could think of.
- VoIP systems use the same network that your computers use. Which means that you already have most of the infrastructure in place. Additionally VoIP systems use computer components that benefit from economies of scale. One look at the cost of a PC today will demonstrate just how cheap these systems are today.
- The strength of VoIP is its flexibility. This means that the system can be tailored to your preferences. VoIP is also built around a system of standards that are not controlled by a single company. As a result you get to design the system to work the way that meets your needs.
Our favorite features
Practice what you preach. This has always been the philosophy of Binary Rescue. We do not sell or install any system that we would not run in our own business. We have come to rely on our VoIP system, in fact we depend on it. Here is a list of some of our favorite features.
- Voicemail by email. We have the ability to receive our voice messages as an attachment in our email inbox. We are in contact anywhere that we have Internet access, which today is just about everywhere.
- Computerized phone book. All of the contacts that we talk to on a regular basis are part of our own digital phone book. By accessing a webpage on our intranet we can easily find the numbers we need. To call all we have to do is click on the link and pick up our line.
- Remote offices. We can connect our phones to the office via the Internet allowing employees to work from the comfort of home while still being connected to the company phone system. Any place that they choose to be they are available via a three digit extension.
