Death of the Phonebook

Archive

The Nintendo generation is pushing 30. We grew up with Nintendo, personal computers and we witnessed the growth of the Internet. As we grew up we grew accustomed to the technology around us. The pager and the landline were replaced by the cellphone. The VCR was replaced by the DVD player. The Walkman was replaced by the MP3 player. And the old reliable phone book has been replaced by the Internet.

The Problem

Prior to the Internet the phone book was the place to look when you needed to find a business. If you owned a business one of the easiest ways to acquire new customers was to purchase a prominent ad in the phone book. When the Internet took over we all had to learn a new way of getting noticed. To compound the problem the younger generations are even more accustomed to turning to the Internet for their information needs. The new challenge is how to utilize the tools of the Internet to gain the attention of potential customers.

Facts & Figures

  • Google performs 235 million searches per day.

  • Adwords, the Google advertising system, generated revenues of $16.4B in 2007.

  • 55% of all Internet advertising is targeted at the consumer market.

  • Internet advertising has grown from $907M in 1997 to $21.2B in 2007.

The Solution

The first step in the solution is to identify your target market. If your target market is 35 or younger you absolutely must develop an online marketing strategy. The basics of this strategy include a well developed web presence through your website and various social networking sites. An online advertising strategy should also be developed including search engine optimization, keyword advertising through the major search engines and banner advertising on sites that your target market frequents. For those who have been around a while much of this should sound familiar. The underlying concepts of marketing have not changed, develop your brand, identify your target customers, and put yourself in front of your target market as often as possible. The only true difference is that the Internet and various technologies have replaced the traditional methods of getting the attention of your target market.
